What can I expect at my first visit – Oral Surgery Consultation?

Knowing what happens at an oral surgery consultation removes the uncertainty that makes many patients anxious. Here's exactly what to expect at your first visit.

For many patients, the unknown is the most anxiety-provoking part of any medical appointment. Knowing what actually happens at an oral surgery consultation removes the uncertainty and helps you arrive prepared and confident.

Before You Arrive

Your surgeon's office will typically ask you to complete medical and dental health history forms before or at your first visit. Bring a list of all current medications (including supplements and over-the-counter drugs), your insurance information, and any referral paperwork or X-rays from your dentist. If you have had recent imaging (dental X-rays, panoramic films, or a cone beam CT), bring copies or ask your dentist to send them electronically.

The Clinical Examination

Your surgeon will review your health history, conduct a focused examination of the relevant area (for example, examining the position and condition of a wisdom tooth or assessing the site of a planned implant), and review any available imaging. In many cases, new X-rays will be taken in the office — including possibly a panoramic X-ray or a 3D cone beam CT scan for complex cases.

The Discussion

Your surgeon will explain their findings and diagnosis, describe the recommended treatment and why it is recommended, outline the procedure including what to expect before, during, and after, discuss anesthesia options, explain potential risks and complications, and answer your questions. This is your opportunity to ask everything you want to know — no question is too basic or too detailed.

Scheduling and Preparation

If you decide to proceed, the consultation typically concludes with scheduling the procedure and reviewing pre-operative instructions. You'll receive written instructions to follow before your surgery, including fasting requirements if sedation will be used and any medication adjustments needed.

A well-conducted consultation leaves you informed, prepared, and comfortable with the plan ahead.
